April 2024 consultation:

Council invites you to have your say on the proposed new Auburn Basketball Centre located at Church Street, Lidcombe. The proposal is situated across two lots legally described as Lot 1 DP 581438 and Lot 7046 DP 1065005. The proposed new centre is located approximately 30-40 metres south west of the existing Auburn Basketball Centre. 

The site is located on Crown Land and is under the control and management of Cumberland City Council. The Auburn Basketball Centre is part of a larger reserve known as Wyatt Park that includes athletics clubs, netball courts, a Scout Hall, a Girl Guides club, a youth centre, off leash dog area, oval, sports fields, tennis courts, an aquatic centre and associated parking.

The proposal forms part of the Auburn Basketball Centre Expansion Project, which will include the construction of a new dedicated training and development high-performance facility which is to cater for a full spectrum of participation and athlete pathway development. The Centre will be primarily used for training purposes by the Sydney Kings, Sydney Flames Basketball teams and the Hoops Capital Academy. In addition to the training and administration of players, the Basketball Centre may host other special events such as Members Days, Open Training Days and other basketball events.

The new facility will be located approximately 30-40 metres south west of the existing Auburn Basketball Centre. The following description is a broad summary of works proposed at this site as part of the facility:

• Two training basketball courts;
• Gym and Recovery Spaces;
• Players Lounge
• Film room for player development and education;
• Retractable spectator seating;
• Sports administration spaces with workstations and associated meeting rooms;
• Associated player and spectator amenities;
• Reception and Kiosk for food and beverages;
• Storage areas; and
• Plant to service the facility.

Community Benefits

The new basketball facility will provide a range of benefits for the local community, which include:

• Provide an accessible indoor sport facility that supports talent identification and development pathways - from aspiring elite athletics to elite performance and mastery.
• Support the enhancement of inclusive elite sport infrastructure including dedicated female programs and facilities to improve pathways for women and girls.
• Enhance the existing capacity of the Parramatta Basketball Association and community, health and liveability benefits associated with increased participation in sport.
• Align with federal, state and local government objectives whilst meeting the vision of state and national sporting bodies.
• Enhance the community experience and be in alignment with the broader Wyatt Park Plan of Management.
• Total combined benefit from the expansion over 10 years will be approximately $80 million. 
• Provide a range of health and fitness opportunities that will support the current and future population growth and range of ages groups within the community.
• Facilities will enable greater participation to assist in fostering sporting excellence for the future, and strengthening the sport and recreation industry by enabling and providing facilities that will support lifelong participation.
