Protect Coleman Park and Carnarvon Golf Course from Cementery Expansion
August 2025 update
Save Coleman Park and Carnarvon Golf Course Community Rally
Council is encouraging all residents to stand together in opposition to the proposed reclassification of local open spaces.
To show support for the protection of our community's green areas, residents are invited to attend a community rally organised by the Member for Auburn, Lynda Voltz MP.
The rally will be held on Sunday 31 August at 12:30pm, at Coleman Park, Georges Ave & Nottinghill Road, Lidcombe.
This event provides an important opportunity for the community to make their voices heard and to demonstrate the strong local opposition to the proposed changes. Council stands with the community in advocating for the preservation of our valuable open spaces.
For more information about the rally, access the Community Rally flyer in the 'Document Library' section on the right-hand side of the page. 👉
Thank you to the thousands who signed the original petition to Parliament. Your support sent a powerful message: our community values and will fight to protect its precious green spaces.
While the parliamentary petition has now closed, new information has come to light. We have since learned that Coleman Park, a much-loved and heavily used local sports park next to Carnarvon Golf Course, is also being considered by the NSW Government for future cemetery development.
This is unacceptable.
A new community petition has been launched to call on decision-makers to act on the following
- Direct Metropolitan Memorial Parks to immediately remove the lands on which Carnarvon Golf Course and Coleman Park sit from any list of potential cemetery expansion sites.
- Direct the NSW Government to honour its commitments to protecting green open space and parklands, especially those near Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs).
- Require Metropolitan Memorial Parks (MMP) to investigate and consider alternative cemetery sites outside a “30-minute” drive from Sydney’s inner suburbs—especially locations where urban green space is not under threat.
Our parks are not vacant land—they are vital community assets that support health, connection, sport, and biodiversity.
👉 Sign the new petition today and stand with your community to protect Coleman Park and Carnarvon Golf Course.
