Toongabbie Bridge upgrade

The major works within Cumberland City Council include: 

• The localised widening of Wentworth Avenue at the intersection of Cornelia Road, which will add an additional southbound lane to the traffic signals.
• Upgrades to the Junia Avenue Service Road carpark
• Public domain upgrades
• A proposed additional pedestrian crossing leg on the southern side of The Portico and Portico Parade intersection

To facilitate these improvements, Junia Avenue Service Road West will need to be closed at its intersection with Cornelia Road.

This project is a joint initiative between all levels of government, with Cumberland City Council and City of Parramatta leading the delivery of the works.

In mid‑2024, each Council received  funding from Transport for NSW to progress detailed design and approvals.

The Australian Government has also committed funding to enable the construction of the project.

In 2019, the NSW Government commenced a study to identify ways to ease congestion at and near the Toongabbie Bridge. The study confirmed that traffic congestion primarily stems from the intersections on both sides of the bridge, rather than the bridge structure itself.

It recommended measures to improve traffic flow, road safety and active transport, but ruled out widening the bridge over the railway due to high cost and minimal congestion benefit.

The upgrades led by Cumberland City Council will help ease long‑standing congestion around the Toongabbie Bridge precinct by improving traffic flow on Wentworth Avenue and enhancing pedestrian connections.

Creating an additional southbound lane and upgrading nearby public spaces will reduce travel delays, support safer movements for drivers and pedestrians.

The additional crossing leg will create safer pedestrian movements around the station precinct and greater access to businesses.

These improvements together will contribute to a more efficient, safer and more connected local road network that supports future growth in the area and In accordance with the Council adopted Toongabbie Public Domain Masterplan
